CHAPTER VII. HISTORY. FERNANDES AND BURNY (1969-1980)26 September 2017
CHAPTER IX. HOW TO DATE A FERNANDES GUITAR.14 November 2017
In 1981, because of the pressure from Gibson and Fender, FERNANDES created “The Revival” series. FERNANDES changed the design of his logo and inlay on the head peg board. A lot of different logo and head designs were used. But they made clone guitars. These are incredible nice quality instruments. On the Revival Stratocaster, the saddles were stamped like Fenders, except bore the F.S.R.G. stamp (Fernandes Sound and Research Group) instead of the FENDER stamp. Other details were uncanny, too, in their replication of the Fender Strat. The Tele was just as meticulously cloned as well.
In 1982, the “Limited Edition” models started and from 1985 to 1989 “The Function” serie was in the market. Thus there were three series in the 80s: “LIMITED EDITION” (1982-85), “THE FUNCTION” (1985-89) and “REVIVAL SERIES” (1981-89). From 1981 to 1989 FERNANDES guitars probably were made by Tokai Gakki.

As for the BURNY’s, the Les Paul models were given the name “Super Grade” instead of “Les Paul.” These models began with RLG (and FLG) and then a number, designating the price at which it was to list at, similar to other Japanese brands from the same era. The BURNY Super Grade Les Pauls have been reported by many recording and gigging professionals as “the best” clone of the original 50’s and 60’s Les Pauls. They say the feel of the neck is identical and especially enjoy the tone of the pickups.
From 1982 to 1991 BURNY guitars were made by Tokai, Fujigen (until late 80s), Kasuga, Matsumoku (from 1982 to 1986) and Dyna Gakki.
The current manufacturer of FERNANDES guitars is Kawai Gakki. They made all FERNANDES guitars
as OEM contract. Current Japanese made BURNYs are probably produced by Tokai.o.
