CHAPTER XI. HOW TO DATE A BURNY GUITAR. ADDITIONAL KEYS.

If you are looking for information to date an old BURNY guitar, you are in the right place. Get some additional keys here.

Wire drilling

BURNY LPs with diagonal wire drilling (wire comes out on the left hand corner of the neck pickup cavity) are built from 1978 to around 1985-86 (probably Tokai factory).

Tokai catalogue (1979). Diagonal wire drilling (left side of the neck pickup cavity).

According to some authors some BURNY guitars were also made at the Fujigen factory in 1985-86. Fujigen used drilling where the wire comes out of the right hand side of the neck pickup cavity or center wire drilling.

Greco (1977) made by the Fujigen factory. Diagonal wire drilling (right side of the neck pickup cavity).

Early Terada guitars (1973-79) have center wire drilling.

Burny Les Paul Custom FLC-100 (1977). Terada center wire drilling.

Some of the BURNY RLGs have the Matsumoku bolt tenon that was also used on the Matsumoku made Arias and some like the RLG-150, RLG-120, RLG-90 BURNY models have a Gibson like diagonal wiring channel (just under the Maple top) that’s very similar to some Matsumoku Arias. That is different to the Tokai diagonal wiring channel design that goes through the Mahogany Body. The RLG-150, RLG-120, and RLG-90 models were made by Matsumoku from 1982 to 1986. Matsumoku went out of business in 1987 which could be why the RLG-150, RLG-120, RLG-90 models stop around this time.

Potentiometers

Pot codes on BURNY’s used from 1981 to 1991, also by Kasuga, Matsumoku and Dyna, have the following format:

First line:

  • M500kOhmA (tone) or M500kOhmB (volume)

Second line:

YM L

  • Y = year

  • M = month. M = 1-9, O, N and D; 1=january, 2= february, etc, O = october, N=november and D= december

  • L = type. L = K or P. K=normal type, P=push-pull

1988 December. Normal type.

The pointer washers on BURNY LPCs from 1982-1985 are longer and the point has a 45 degree angle in stead of the shorter 90 degree angle of the later LPCs. All LPCs feature 90 degree angle pointer washers so are from 1986 or later.

Long 45 degree pointer washer.
